I started working at Pinja’s Kouvola office straight from the school in the autumn of 2018 when I graduated as a Master of Engineering in Chemical Technology from the Lappeenranta University of Technology.
At Pinja, I have been able to carry out versatile process engineering tasks for many different industrial operators. Currently, for example, I am working on a modernization of terminal extinguishing systems to make them comply with the new standards.
I like it that my duties are very versatile: on some days, I draw PI diagrams with AutoCAD and on others, I perform equipment dimensioning or prepare a regulatory application. At times, we also go to the customer to meet them in the mill environment.
As projects are carried out in cooperation with the other departments, it is almost impossible not to learn new things from the other designers. It is great that my workmates have so many different skills. At Pinja, there is a positive approach of working together – we take care of one another and the atmosphere is open. It is nice to come to work!
The best thing in the workplace: a good atmosphere and versatile work!
In 2012, I started studying chemical technology at the Lappeenranta University of Technology. My chemistry teacher in senior high school was really great and made me inspired of this field. In addition, I was interested in technology and there was a possibility to study chemical technology in Lappeenranta, where I come from.
In 2014, I took a gap year during which I was involved in the startup of the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery. I performed versatile work in the laboratory, for example, analysis of process samples. Regarding my studies, this was an educative experience as I was able to participate in a startup of a new plant.
As my Master’s Thesis, I conducted a study for Pöyry on treatment of wastewaters from CTMP (chemi-thermomechanical pulp). After graduating, I applied for a Junior Designer’s job at Pinja and became employed.
One memorable project is my involvement in the pre-design of a fire extinguishing terminal. My duties included familiarization with standards used in the design and preliminary process calculations based on the standards. It was interesting to see how design work is started “from scratch” and how a terminal starts to take form. During the project, I really learnt a lot of things related to terminal operations.
At Pinja, we take care of one another and the atmosphere is open!
