I work at Pinja as a design engineer and project manager responsible for plant engineering projects. Currently, I am on international secondment in Chile where we are building a white liquor plant. In practice, I carry the responsibility for the overall project and delegate work to others. As far as possible, I also do design work myself.
Normally, my daily work includes a lot of communication with customers. It is related to problem solving and keeping customers informed of the current status. Since large projects require such an intense concentration, I try to take one project at a time.
In enjoy the versatility of work. I have been involved in design projects for a certain company already for many years, but all assignments are different. We have supplied them an evaporation plant, a white liquor plant and a methanol plant.
The best thing in my job is good workmates and crazy humor. Here, it is easy to go and talk with just any boss.
After my military service, I studied mechanical engineering and plastic technology in Riihimäki. I liked to use 3D software and modeling was interesting and gave a good basis for my future.
After my first study year, I got a summer job at SW Industrial Gears in Karkkila to assemble large industrial gears, which were manufactured for paper machines and similar. It was interesting to see how the gears operated. I continued in this job after the summer alongside school and stayed there also the following summer. Then I started to think that I also needed experience in engineering design.
I got a summer job at Neste Jacobs involved in creating a point cloud model of a pipeline bridge. This was my first experience in pipeline design, the area in which I work still today.
I was employed by Pöyry to design pipelines and steel constructions. I could also put my design skills into practice while working as erection supervisor at an industrial plant worksite in Russia.
I got a job as a plant engineering designer at Descal (currently Pinja). I was the only plant engineering designer for a couple of years until the merger in 2013, which brought new workmates and duties. I was involved in designing a fiber line, a chemical kitchen and a chemical department, for example.
My first time to lead a large project was when we designed a methanol cleaning plant to Andritz in Sweden. It was very educative and nice, too. At some stage, we noticed that the plant layout was too small. At this point, it was necessary to interrupt the game to construct an additional building for certain equipment.
